Life in Spain - TIE

Steps to getting the TIE, in sequential order!

Padron’ - upon arrival and before organising the TIE appointment you are required to ‘empadronarse’! This means going to the local Town Hall and register yourself as being ‘resident’ and as such on the local census. This is simply a question of demonstrating your address (owner or rented) and ID (passport and NIE) but the challenge is actually a) finding the web link to make an appointment and then b) actually ‘getting’ an appointment in a timely manner. Bearing in mind this needs to be done BEFORE you go to the TIE appointment.

Process - Complete the online form here. In the last section Selección temática - select firstly OAC: ATENCION PRESENCIAL EN LA OFICINA and sub group select Padron Gestiones

Once you have an appointment, make sure you make note of your appointment confirmation number, you will need it once you get to the registration office.

Documents:

  • Appointment confirmation (it has a reference number)

  • Proof of identification such as passport (if you are applying for your family members you will need their IDs as well)

  • Proof that you reside in the location where you are registering through one of the following:

  1. A valid rental contract in your name that extends beyond a six month period.

If your name is not on the lease, either the owner / leaseholder must verify your place of residence by signing an Autorización de Empadronamiento form. Also take with you a colour photocopy of the owner/lease holder’s government ID that was used to register them in the Padró Municipal d’Habitants, and a copy of the lease as well.

  2. A recent utility bill in your name with the address of the residence you are registering at (paid within the last three months).

Output - Your ‘padron’ certificate is provided to you on the spot at the end of the appointment. Keep this as its required for the TIE appointment.

Additional note, if you are a non EU resident and you do not have a permanent residence permit, you are required to renew your padró every two years.

‘Pay tax form’ - TASA Model 072, Codigo 012. This must also be done BEFORE the TIE appointment; it must be paid and stamped (by a bank as Paid) and a receipt provided that you will need for the TIE. We were one day away from our TIE appointment and then read reports about people having issues with doing this.

Process - Complete the Tax payment form, Tasa Modela 790 (012) and select: “TIE que documenta la primera concesión de la autorización de residencia temporal, de estancia o para trabajadores transfronterizos”. Print it out. In Jan 2022 cost is 16,08 euros (the bank will just debit directly from your account). I understand you can pay it at any ATM machine using the bar code but we had some issues with this so I would suggest the surest way of success is to take the duly completed form (it is in duplicate 3 pages) to a branch of ‘YOUR’ bank between the hours of 0800 - 1000.

The bank keep one copy of the duplicated Tasa form and provide you with a stamped receipt.

Output - Retain your two remaining copies of Tasa form AND most importantly, the bank’s stamped payment receipt, ready for presentation at the TIE appointment.

**** You are now ready to make the TIE appointment (submit fingerprints and documentation) ****

The next challenge is it is nearly impossible to get an appointment in Barcelona and when you do, ‘note to self’ make sure you tick the right drop down for the right appointment (as there are two).

1. MAKING YOUR TIE APPOINTMENT (to submit fingerprints and documents)

Once you have the padron and the paid fees receipt for the tax form you can organise the TIE appointment to get your fingerprints taken.

Process: Go to police station website and select Barcelona within the drop down menu under PROVINCIAS DISPONIBLES and then click on ‘Aceptar’.

Under ‘TRAMITES CUERPO NACIONAL DE POLICÍA’ select ‘POLICÍA-TOMA DE HUELLAS (EXPEDICIÓN DE TARJETA) Y RENOVACIÓN DE TARJETA DE LARGA DURACIÓN’ from the drop-down menu. Once selected, click on ‘Aceptar’.

I am told that once you ‘aceptar’ on this page you will get a page that comes up with all the documents you require for the appointment - but as I ticked on the wrong drop down (hence my note to self above) the below outlines exactly what was required by the Police for our fingerprinting session.

Documents:

  • Printed copy of the appointment confirmation

  • Passport (original and photocopies of the photo page, the NLV visa stamp and the airport entry stamp)

  • Completed and signed TIE Application Form EX-17 FORM

  • Completed and signed remaining 2 pages of the Tasa Modelo 790, Codigo 012 form AND

  • Fees for the TIE – This is the bank’s stamped payment receipt for the tax form Tasa Modelo 790, Codigo 012.

  • Padron Certificate

  • Passport sized photo – The photo must be recent, taken on a white background, be full passport size

Output - At the end of this appointment you are given a document with instructions on when to make an appointment to collect your TIE from the same police station (45 days later). You must bring this document to the next appointment!

** Tip: It can be extremely difficult to get the appointment for the fingerprinting in Barcelona. Search whatever names are in the drop down lists of available appointments and google map search exactly where they are….be prepared to go a bit further afield to do the appointment. We went to Vilanova - easy 40 mins train ride south of Barcelona

2. MAKING AN APPOINTMENT FOR COLLECTING YOUR TIE

After the 45 days are up, you need to go back to the police website and select Barcelona within the drop down menu under PROVINCIAS DISPONIBLES and then click on ‘Aceptar’.

Under ‘TRAMITES CUERPO NACIONAL DE POLICÍA’ select POLICÍA – RECOGIDA DE TARJETA DE IDENTIDAD DE EXTRANJERO (TIE) DURACIÓN) from the drop-down menu. Once selected, click on ‘Aceptar’.

This takes you to the appointment booking page for your TIE card collection listing out the documents that you will need to submit and conditions of your appointment. Read the instructions and scroll to the bottom of the page and select ‘Entrar’.
